Syllables are SO important! It is essential that our young students master segmenting words into syllables, as well as putting syllables together in order to make new words.

That way, once they become readers, they will be able to decode big words by putting smaller parts together. Their reading will be more fluid, more efficient, and will make more sense!

I find the best way to help my students master syllables is to practice, practice, practice! We play a variety of games to help us get better and better at breaking words into parts and putting them back together.

Use these clip cards during your literacy centres and give your students valuable and engaging practice breaking words into parts and counting how many parts there are!

To prepare the cards, simply print, laminate, and cut. To make them self correcting, you may want to put a sticker on the back, behind the correct answer.

Provide your students with clothespins (*not included), and model how to say the name of the object in the middle of the card, break it into parts, count them, and clip the correct number.

Simple, but fun and effective!

This resource includes:

  • 50 clip cards with a food theme
  • All cards are SQUARES, for easy cutting!
  • In case students are still struggling with number recognition, the cards include images that depict how many claps to help these students still be able to clip correctly

Check out the preview above for a closer look, and to see the included words!
